Marshmallow Mondays

Books We Like

In the town of Chewandswallow, weather comes three times a day – at breakfast, lunch and dinner.  But it never rains rain, and it never snows snow.  It rains things like soup and juice.  It snows mashed potatoes.  Life gets out of control for the townspeople when the weather takes a turn for the worse, and the food gets larger and larger.  Rydan giggles at this imaginative story over and over again.  The movie is definitely worth seeing as well.

Gritch the Witch wants piggie pie for breakfast, but she’s out of pigs.  So, she sets out for Old McDonald’s Farm in search of 8 pigs.  All of the animals on the farm pretend that there are “no piggies” on Old McDonald’s Farm, which makes Gritch pull her hair and stomp her feet.  Rydan can’t get enough of this story.  Gritch will make you laugh until you belly aches as she becomes more frustrated as each page turns.  Will she find her 8 piggies?  Read it to find out!

Rydan chose this one from his first Scholastic Book Order at school.  It’s a fun little story about a generous witch who makes “room on the broom” for a few animals.  When they are threatened by a dragon, the witch finds a clever way to repay the animals for their help.  It’s a charming story with simple, repetitive rhyme that’s fun to read aloud.  Since Rydan loves Halloween, he chooses this one once or twice a week to read at bedtime.

Rydan would read this one every night.  It’s an enjoyable retelling of the big screen movie with the charm that Disney movies always bring.  Aladdin and Princess Jasmine once again fall in love, but not without the evil Jafar attempting to get in their way of happiness.  Thanks to the big blue Genie, Aladdin and Princess Jasmine live happily ever after.  A lot of times Rydan wants to fall asleep to Aladdin the movie after we read this one.

When Rydan brought this home as his very first library book, I had flashbacks of my own library days.  The book was clearly worn, but it made me smile to see that after so many years kids are still enjoying this story as much as I did.  When the sweet Miss Nelson goes missing and the ugly Viola Swamp takes her place, the kids learn a valuable moral lesson.  We read this one that many times that Rydan began reciting some of the pages on his own.

Parents can relate to this one just as much as kids.  It’s about the anguish and panic of a little girl who misplaces her stuffed bear.   Her family tries to teach her to remember where she puts things, so they ignore her requests for help in finding the bear.  After looking “everywhere” for her prized bear, and stumbling upon numerous other lost but forgotten toys, it’s soon bedtime and she of course can’t go to sleep without her little stuffed friend.  A surprise awaits her as her mother pulls down the covers.  Rydan finds this little girl quite silly and dramatic, and he loves to recite her words of utter distress as she searches for her bear.

It’s bedtime in the cold gray tomb with a black lagoon, and two slimy claws, and a couple of jaws, and a skull and a shoe and a pot full of goo.  The rhyming sequence in this Halloween bedtime story will delight your little werewolf.  It’s a perfect parady to the children’s classic “Goodnight Moon.”  Rydan loves to read the end of this story… “Goodnight monsters everywhere!”

Get tongue-tied in this silly book of simple rhymes.  Hunt for the zamp in the lamp, the jertain behind the curtain and the nooth brush on the toothbrush.  You and your child will find endless amusement in this book of creative wordplay.

Hedgehog has finished building her cozy nest for winter.  Unfortunately, an apple falls from a tree and gets stuck in her spines, making it impossible for her to fit into her new home.  Several friends try to help her, but their advice only makes her situation worse.  She ends up with numerous objects stuck to her body.  What will Hedgehog do so that she can get into her new home?

Glad to see that Rydan appreciates Miss Nelsons creative thinking. Elle’ is always very curious and tells me how mysterious it is when she goes missing.
