Rydan loves Halloween just as much as he loves Christmas.  On the first day of Fall, he came home from school and said “Bridgie, how many more days until Halloween?” and I knew his count down was on.  For Rydan, dressing up on Halloween is as exciting as waking up on Christmas morning.  He has had his Halloween costume for two weeks already.  He could spend hours looking through the Halloween aisles at the grocery store. Just this past weekend we bought Halloween cupcake mix with orange icing, Halloween colored sprinkles and cupcake liners with skulls on them.  He wants Lily to dress up as Spongebob for Halloween, which really isn’t too surprising considering the fact that he wanted to name her “Spongebob Buffington.”

So in the spirit of Halloween, Marshmallow Mondays is sharing its favorite Halloween books with the readers.  You might notice that some of these are also listed under Books We Like, which just goes to show that Rydan likes to read these all year round.

Halloween is the setting as kids rhyme their way through the night and to a spook-filled birthday party. Emphasized sounds such as “CLICKETY CLACK” and “HISSSSS!” will allow younger children to enjoy the fun of reading, while bright, colorful illustrations will catch their eye.

The witch and her cat are happily flying through the sky on a broomstick when the wind picks up and blows away the witch’s hat, then her bow, and then her wand! Luckily, three helpful animals find the missing items, and all they want in return is a ride on the broom. But is there room on the broom for so many friends? And when disaster strikes, will they be able to save the witch from a hungry dragon?

As Brother and Sister Bear go trick-or-treating by themselves for the first time, they plan to avoid Miz McGrizz’s spooky home. But during their Halloween outing, the cubs discover that appearances can be deceiving.

Arthur finds everything about Halloween scary: his little sister’s costume, even his morning snack! But he’s most afraid of the big spooky house on the corner where no one wants to go trick-or-treating. His fears are eventually soothed once Arthur realizes things don’t always turn out the way you imagine.

It’s bedtime in the cold gray tomb with a black lagoon, and two slimy claws, and a couple of jaws, and a skull and a shoe and a pot full of goo. But as a little werewolf settles down, in comes the Goon determined at all costs to run amok and not let any monster have his rest.

If you or your child have a favorite Halloween book, Marshmallow Mondays would love to hear from you!  Leave us a comment and tell us about it.
