Share Your Spare Success

Share Your Spare 5K 2015 was a success! We had over 100 runners, walkers, kids and dogs join us on Saturday at the Horse Park to raise awareness for kidney disease and organ donation. We had music, Sidney the Kidney giving high-fives at the Finish Line, kidney tattoos, kidney cookies, kidney games, kidney medals, and lots of smiling faces.

One of the many highlights from this year’s race was that Nana and Pappy Buff were here visiting from Pennsylvania and came along to the race.

This was Ryan AND Lily’s first 5K, and Rydan led the One Mile Fun Run for the second year in a row. Less than a year post-transplant for Ryan, this was a really special day for us. We were simply thrilled to be able to plan the race again and pay forward all of the support and kindness that we received from last year’s inaugural Share Your Spare 5K. This year’s funds are supporting a program called “Get Healthy, Get Transplanted,” which helps local kidney disease patients overcome the obstacles that are keeping them from being approved for placement on the transplant waiting list.

Another highlight was this moment. This is Ryan and Carol, two double organ transplant recipients congratulating each other on their 5K finishes.

And another exciting, proud moment... Lily hearing her name called as the second place finisher in the 12 and under category.

A very special thank you goes out to our dear friend, Nicole Nelson, who showed up at 6:45am and surprised me with her presence. Nicole was our superstar volunteer and photographer, and we are so grateful for her friendship and her help on race day. Ever since she learned about Ryan’s health situation over a year ago, Nicole has been right by our side, sometimes physically, and sometimes from a distance, but we can always count on her for lots of love, laughs and support.

I also want to thank all of our virtual runners and walkers who participated from their own communities on Saturday in support of kidney disease and organ donation.
